Goldie #5

12"X12" Ballpoint Pen on Record Cover Sleeve

Born as Christopher John Pyle in Richmond, Indiana, his compulsive doodling was evident from childhood, influenced by cartoonists like Basil Wolverton and caricaturists including Paolo Garretto. Pyle first honed his artistic talents professionally as drummer for Indianapolis band The Late Show, filling downtime during the band's intense touring schedule by perfecting his dense ballpoint pen technique.

By the late 1980s, his trademark style - rope-like portrait drawings woven atop found paper surfaces - drew clients like Rolling Stone and Sports Illustrated. Hand-illustrating album covers for major labels, Pyle's two-tone contoured heads recall imaginative Chicago outsider artists, exuding a fuzzy, dimensional feel reminiscent of felting or fiber art.
