Kim Ha | Full Set (The Refill)

Friday April 28th 2023 at 6pm Mortal Machine Gallery
940 Royal Street New Orleans 70116
We are excited to present a fully immersive concept show by photographer Kim Ha, known for her photo series “Ladies and Lowriders” and the first installment of this show, Full Set which debuted at Axiom Gallery in December 2022.
Full Set is a nostalgic journey through the lens of a first-generation Vietnamese American daughter and her childhood in a nail salon. It's a story of inspiration, life phases and an homage to the woman that inspires her to this day. To her mother who sacrificed and worked hard to provide a life for her family. To the hard-working women who come into the nail salon to get pampered and away from it all. A full set of nails represents beauty and strength. Full Set is dedicated to all women that wake up every day and do it despite their trials and tribulations. - Kim Ha
The show features Ha’s photography and also a stacked lineup of seriously talented artists such as Angeli Earley, Trinity Barriere and sculpture artist Christian Dinh, who is showing a nail polish themed ceramic piece titled ”Yellow”
Yellow works to redirect the stigma and
stereotypes of Asian-American society,
specifically, the stereotype of “Asian people
being yellow.” The piece consists of 108 ceramic yellow nail polish bottles, displayed similar to how these items would typically be displayed in a beauty salon, suggesting “what is in style” or “what is beautiful.” Within this context, the multitude of the yellow nail polish bottles act as a reclamation of identity, and represent that “if Asian people are yellow, then yellow is beautiful.” - Christian Dinh
Opening Reception is at 6pm on the first friday of Jazzfest and will feature sounds by Rapbaum and a beautiful bar experience by Chicken and Champagne. See you there!
