Melissa Monroe's artwork serves as a personal display of vulnerable emotions. Through her figures and forms, she presents them authentically, allowing them to stand in their true form for observation. For viewers, her art acts as a mirror for self-reflection. Her work is timeless, placing viewers in spaces that evoke memories of the unknown and the yet-to-be, functioning as puzzles that lead to future possibilities.
As a multidisciplinary artist, Monroe expresses her visions through textiles, sculpture, and acrylic paintings. Self-taught and a full-time artist for the past nine years, she explores her spiritual practice through mask making, which is further explored through wearing and performing in the masks. Her video installations, featuring herself and the masks, are projected during live music performances.
Since 2021, Monroe has broadened her understanding of texture and shape by creating handmade rugs and textiles with a tufting machine. Her designs are influenced by her experiences in painting and her passion for pattern and abstraction. She has become an early innovator or the craft and is well known in the tufting community.
Each new medium she works with informs her process, weaving and connecting ideas across all her mediums. This dynamic approach continually expands her iconography and artistic purpose.
Melissa Monroe lives in Portland, Oregon, with her three children, partner, and dogs. She has exhibited internationally and is represented by several galleries, including Lynn Hanson Gallery in Seattle, WA, and Rental Sales Gallery in Portland, OR.
