The immortal characters of Bosko, Toby, and Mickey lock rubbery arms together as they stroll together like best pals into another dimension. Gary Baseman’s monochromatic palette suggests another place and time, nodding to the ghosts of 20th century creative forces like Warner Brothers and Walt Disney that continue to haunt Baseman and his own vast universe of art and characters. In BTM, Mickey Mouse tags along with Bosko and Toby, the artist’s real black cat companion that passed away in 2024 and his original character Toby that is everyone’s “best friend” and “keeper of secrets.”
